Monica Sakurai of Sakura Hill Farm LLC.
During her Junior riding career, Minoca rode in the"Big Equitation" on the Northeast show circuits with her 17.3h Hanoverian gelding, Cat Burglar. When Monica was 13, the pair were Grand Champion and Grand Reserve Champion of the Fairfield-Westchester Cos. Professional Horsemen's Association Mini- Medal and the Mini-Maclay year-end finals respectively. The following year, they competed in all of the East Coast "Big Equitation" national finals including
the Maclay, USEF Medal finals in Harrisburg, PA, USET East Coast Talent Search in Gladstone, NJ and the CHJA Junior Medal finals in Fairfield, CT (placing 6th) and qualified for New England Junior Medal Finals. After retiring her equitation horse, Monica continued riding as a catch rider on an array of horses including a newly imported 5-year old warmblood in the Pre-green Hunters at Ocala HITS in 2003. Beginning in 2005, Monica competed on Tisolde VDL, a 2000 KWPN mare imported by Sakura Hill Farm, LLC, at the Level 5 and eventually Level 6 Junior Jumpers with excellent results.
Monica graduated in May, 2009, from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts as a Biology major vet with a minor in Russian. At Mount Holyoke, Monica competed in the Intercollegiate Open Division on the Hunt Seat Equitation team and consistently went to the Zone 4 Regionals.
Since graduation from Mount Holyoke College, Monica has been focusing on the jumpers, starting and educating young horses with a strong focus on flatwork and rideability. After having worked with United Kingdom Nations Cup rider John Brown over the summer of 2009, she began working with United Kingdom show jumper rider and Olympian Tim Stockdale in Northampton, England in the fall of 2009. She returned to Florida in 2010 to continue training with John Brown and has been training, riding, and competing Sakura Hill horses and helping others with their young horses on a very selective basis. Beginning in 2011, Monica began riding and training for Le Cheval Francais owned by Marjory Berkache an accomplished Eventing and Dressage rider. She hopes to continue her education starting, producing and competing her own as well as outsider young horses. She has become adept as an equine photographer and as a website designer and social media marketer for Sakura Hill Farm as well as for her own business, The Equine Media Project.
Over the last few years, Shannon has focused her efforts on the sales aspect of her business, bringing along young prospects and is now expanding into more lessons, training, and more competitions, in addition to her sales program. With over 75 successful matches in the two years, she has developed a program that works exceptionally well with finding homes for all types of horses.
Mallory Slack is another young rider that is sponsored by I Sell Tack.com. She shares with us some of her memories, accomplishments and goals, below.
"I rode on and off for a few years as a child. When I was 13, I started riding daily and got my first horse, Oberon. We started in the pre-children’s then moved up to the pre-minis and then the minis. Oberon and I achieved many championships and were series Pre-Mini Champions and Equitation Challenge Champions at the Hunter’s Isle Horse Shows in 2009. I also received a bronze medal for equitation from the LIHS in 2009. Following that, I competed for a short time in the Junior Eq on a friend’s investment horse. From May 2011 to August 2011 I was offered and rode a very large and “hot” Irish warm blood in the level 1 and level 2 jumpers. We were champions at virtually every show we competed in on Long Island, achieving a 3rd place award for the year in the Long Island High Score after competing for only 4 months.
I purchased McKinley, my current horse in October 2011 and have spent this year showing him in the Children’s Hunters and the M&S Medal. We were series Reserve Champions in the Children’s Hunters this summer in the Winner’s Circle/Hunter’s Isle Horse Shows. We also qualified for the M&S finals in both the Children’s Hunters and the Medal. We placed 10th of 66 in the Children’s Hunters. I have qualified for Zone 2 Finals in 4th place in the Children’s Hunters. At Zone Finals, we placed 4th in the first over fences class, 8th in the second over fences class and 8th in the hack.
I am planning on a career in the equestrian field and an currently exploring my options for an internship."
Please join all of us here at I Sell Tack.com in wishing Mallory the best of luck - we are sure she will find an internship to take her to the next level!
