Throwback Thursday November 07 2013, 0 Comments

I spent yesterday visiting Sleepy Hollow, NY, one of my favorite places to visit in the fall.  We went to Washington Irving's Sunnyside, Lyndhurst Castle, and then walked around the old burying ground which includes the historic Old Dutch Church featured in the story of the Headless Horseman, one of my favorite tales of all time. Which brings me to Throwback Thursday.

Rather than post pictures of me riding as a kid (I'll spare you the torture), I figured we could have a grand old time hypothesizing what horsemen of olden days may choose to wear, if they were still here today.  Think of the Headless Horseman walking in to your tack shop to try on that dashing new black dressage coat, or do you think he'd opt for white or tan breeches? Full seat or knee patch? I bet he'd want a nice white stock tie, and of course a good pin to keep it all together, since of course, he's already lost his head. (Haha, I crack myself up!)

Then let's look at that new TV show, Sleepy Hollow. What do you guys think? Yay or nay?

I'll tell you so far I'm not a fan. First, the Horseman's horse is white! Who ever heard of a white Daredevil? The nerve of TV! And Ichabod Crane is hot? When did that happen (apparently over the past 200 years...he's aged well). And the attire - well...as a true horseperson of course I'm over-critical of every show or movie with horses in it, whether it's trying to figure out what bit they used, or what tack, and why.

So what do you think the Horseman would prefer if he were around today? Stubben because he's German, or would he have learned like the rest of us, that French saddles are really where it's at? I vote French, but I ride in a Voltaire (and I know many of you have Antares, Butet, and CWDs, so I'd say we're all biased!). And Ichabod, really? Do the English even make a great H/J saddle anymore? Okay okay, I already told you I'm biased, so why don't you share your thoughts and let me know what you think on English and German saddles, compared to my favored French!

Here's how we spent the day:

Washington Irving's Sunnyside

The Legendary Sleepy Hollow Cemetery

Me placing a penny on Carnegie's grave, because it's tradition to do that and make a wish and if I want to keep affording all this lovely fancy French tack, I'm going to need to make money like Carnegie! Except when I order from ISellTack.com because Rachel rocks and has the best prices around, of course. ;)

Okay, and for all of you loyal readers that actually made it to the bottom of this post, here's my personal Throwback Thursday. But I warn you, it's the scariest picture of all (cover your eyes)!

Yes, that is me at summer camp, and yes, I am really wearing an old-school toilet bowl helmet. I believe I was attempting to dive sideways off the horse asking for the canter, but one can't be truly sure, from my exceptional position and balance displayed here. Oh, and the Simpsons shirt is just the icing on the cake... laugh, laugh away! And now share your Throwback Thursdays and comments on the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane's throwback styles.  Ready? GO!

For an added bonus of my excellent childhood riding, check out my personal blog's Throwback Thursday post on Lifewithoutapaddle.com ;) It's worth it, I promise.

Embarrassingly yours,

CJ :)

Happy Throwback Thursday!
